As of 2020, Largest Nuclear Power Plant all over the world contribute 10% of the world’s electricity needs. This is equivalent to 2,552 TeraWattHours of electricity in 2020. This is actually a decrease compared to 2019, which was 2,657 TeraWattHours.
This amount of electricity is supported by at least 445 nuclear reactors from various countries. Currently, there are 50 reactors under construction that are expected to be able to supply electricity to 15% of total global needs. And here are the eight largest nuclear power plant complexes in the world based on their total electricity generation capacity:
1. Kashiwazaki-Kariwa
The largest nuclear power plants in the world is in Japan. The Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plants has a total capacity of 7,965 MW. This is supported by seven boilers reactors, five of which have a capacity of 1,100 MW and the other two have a capacity of 1,356 MW.
Unfortunately, this power plants had to shut down because Japanese authorities are building a sea wall to hold back the potential disaster of earthquakes and tsunamis so that a disaster like the one at the Fukushima nuclear power plants in 2011 does not happen again.
2. Bruce Nuclear Generating Station
The Bruce nuclear power plant is the first for Canada and also the second largest in the world. This power plant has a total capacity of 6,234 MW, supported by eight boiler reactors.
Each reactor has a generation capacity of 786 MW to 891 MW. It is estimated that building this power plant will cost a total of CAD$2.4 billion, which is equivalent to 28 trillion rupiah.
3. Kori Nuclear
South Korea has the third largest nuclear power plant in the world with a capacity of 6,040 MW. In terms of operations. The Kori nuclear power plants is the largest in supplying electricity to the world compared to the two previous power plants. This power plant only operates six of its eight boiler reactors since 2016.
4. Hanul Nuclear
The Hanul nuclear power plant, previously known as the Ulchin nuclear power plants, is also owned by South Korea and has been operating since 1988, providing electricity of 5,928 MW.
This power plant has six boiler reactors and in 2016 it supplied 39,795 GigaWattHours of electricity.
5. Hanbit Nuclear
PLTN has become the third largest nuclear power plants in the world. This power plant has a total capacity of 5,899 MW, supported by six nuclear reactors.
The PLTN uses the Pressurized Water Reactor type, which is used by the majority of Largest Nuclear Power Plant in the world except for England, Japan, and Canada.
